Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair

    Before replacing a hydraulic valve lifter for noisy operation, ensure the noise is not caused by improper rocker arm-to-stem clearance, worn rocker
arms, pushrods or valve tips.

1.

 Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain engine coolant.

2.

 Remove throttle body, then the spark plug wire routing clips mounted on valve cover attaching bolt studs. Lay spark plug wires with the routing
clips attached towards rear of engine.

3.

 Remove rocker arm covers and intake manifold as outlined elsewhere in this section.

4.

 Loosen rocker arm fulcrum attaching bolt(s) a sufficient amount to swing rocker arm aside to allow the pushrod(s) to be removed, then remove
pushrod(s). Keep pushrods in order so they can be returned to their original position.

5.

  Using a suitable magnet, remove lifter(s) from lifter bores. If the lifters are stuck in their bores by excessive varnish or gum buildup, use
tool No. T70L-6500-A or equivalent to remove valve lifters.

6.

Place valve lifters in a rack so they can be installed in their original positions.

7.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a.  Lubricate lifter(s), lifter bores, rocker arms and pushrod(s) with oil conditioner D9AZ-19579-A or suitable heavy engine oil.
b.  Torque bolts to specifications given in Engine Tightening Specifications.
