Suspension Strut / Shock Absorber: Description and Operation
Front
WARNING: ALL VEHICLES ARE EQUIPPED WITH GAS-PRESSURIZED FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER WHICH WILL EXTEND
UNASSISTED. DO NOT APPLY HEAT OR FLAME TO THE FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER STRUT DURING REMOVAL.
The front shock absorber consists of:
^
twin tube, gas-pressurized structure providing damping in both the rebound (up) and compression (down) directions.
^
this damping is accomplished by driving a dual (rebound and compression) acting piston through a fluid environment.
^
the motion resistant forces are controlled by a velocity sensitive variable orifice piston assembly within the front shock absorber.
^
The front shock absorber is part of the front spring and shock absorber assembly and requires disassembly to replace.
^
All vehicles are equipped with low-pressure gas-filled hydraulic shock absorbers of the direct acting type. They must be serviced as an assembly.
^
The front shock absorber mounting brackets isolate front shock absorber from body.
^
The front suspension bearing and seals provide a bearing pivot point and retains front coil spring.
^
The front coil springs allow proper setting of suspension ride heights and control suspension travel during driving/handling maneuvers.
^
anti-lock brake sensor wiring harness routing bracket is a clip-on type bracket.
