4.

Inspect the date code on the park pawl abutment bracket. See Figure 3.

a.

If the date code is either A 4 8 or A 4 9, replace abutment bracket. Go to Step 1 of "Repair".

b.

If the date code is other than what is listed above, go to Step 5 of "Repair".

Repair

1.

Remove tube support bracket torx-head bolt (AX4N only), and gently lower tube assembly to gain access to park pawl abutment bracket bolts.

 
2.

Remove park pawl abutment bracket bolts and remove abutment bracket. Mutilate and discard removed abutment bracket. Retain bolts for reuse.

 
3.

Position new park pawl abutment bracket and install retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 27-30 N-m (20-22 ft-lb). Assure that the new abutment
bracket does not interfere with the movement of the park pawl. Press up on the park rod to assure that the park rod and park pawl move freely. The
park rod cam should be centered in the abutment bracket "V". The park pawl should slide easily along the abutment bracket tang. See Figure 4.

 
4.

Gently reposition tube assembly (AX4N only), and install tube support bracket retaining bolt. Tighten bolt to 11 N-m (8 ft-lb).

 
5.

Clean and inspect elastomeric gasket. Replace only if damaged. Reinstall transaxle pan and gasket. Install and tighten retaining bolts to 10-13 N-m
(7-10 ft-lb).

 
6.

Remove drain pan. Lower vehicle.

 
7.

Refill transaxle with Mercon Automatic Transmission fluid. Follow refill procedures in the appropriate service repair manual to top off fluid level.
Be sure to recheck fluid level after transaxle reaches normal operating temperature.

 
8.

Verify proper park mechanism operation prior to returning the vehicle to the owner.
