Side Air Bag: Service and Repair
Driver Side Air Bag Module

NOTE:  If the driver air bag module did not deploy in a collision, it may not have been needed. Complete all diagnostics before replacing the driver air
bag module.

WARNINGS:

TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE
DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS)
COMPONENTS. TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE
AND WAIT ONE MINUTE. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF EQUIPPED).

CARRY A LIVE AIR BAG MODULE WITH THE AIR BAG AND TRIM COVER POINTED AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. THIS
WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.

DO NOT SET A LIVE AIR BAG MODULE DOWN WITH THE TRIM COVER FACE DOWN. 

Removal

1. Record pre-set radio frequencies for reprogramming following completion of service procedures.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Wait one minute for back-up power supply energy to be depleted.
4. Remove two steering wheel spoke covers from steering wheel.
5. Remove two screw and washer assemblies retaining driver air bag module to steering wheel.
6. Disconnect the air bag electrical connector from air bag sliding contact connector. Remove driver air bag module.

Installation
1. Connect air bag electrical connector to air bag sliding contact connector.
2. Position driver air bag module to steering wheel and secure with two screw and washer assemblies tightened to 10.2-13.8 N.m (90-122 lb-in).
3. Install two steering wheel spoke covers.
4. Reconnect battery ground cable.
5. Prove out air bag system.
6. Reprogram radio frequencies and set clock.
