Fuel Injector: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable and secure it out of the way.

2.

Remove fuel cap.

3.

Release pressure from fuel system. 

4.

Remove upper intake manifold.

5.

Remove fuel supply manifold.

6.

Remove injector retain clips.

Fuel Injector

7.

Carefully remove electrical harness connectors from individual injectors.

8.

Grasping injector body, pull up gently while rocking injector from side to side.

9.

Inspect injector "plastic hat" (covering the injector pintle) and washer for signs of deterioration. Replace as required. If hat is missing, look for it
in the intake manifold.

Fuel Injector

INSTALLATION

1.

Replace and lubricate the two injector O-rings on each injector with clean engine oil.
NOTE:  Never use silicone grease. It will clog the injectors.

2.

Install injector(s). Use a light, twisting, pushing motion to install them.

3.

Reconnect injector retaining clips.

4.

Install fuel rail assembly, as outlined in this section.

5.

Install electrical harness connectors to injectors.

6.

Install upper intake manifold.

7.

Install fuel cap at tank.

8.

Connect battery ground cable.

9.

Add engine coolant if required.

10.

Turn key ON/OFF several times without starting engine to check for fuel leaks.
NOTE:  Check all connections at fuel rails, push connect fittings, etc.

11.

Start engine and warm to operating temperature. Check for coolant leak if coolant was removed.
