Ignition Control Module: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1.
Remove distributor cap and position it and attached wires aside so as not to interfere with work area.
2.
Rotate the crankshaft to position the distributor rotor to point to the #1 spark plug tower. The TDC timing mark on the crankshaft pulley should
line up with the timing pointer.
3.
Make a reference mark on the distributor housing where the rotor is pointing to allow easier installation.
4.
Remove rotor from distributor and remove the hold-down bolt and clamp.
5.
Disconnect the module electrical connectors and check connector for looseness, corrosion or damage.
NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the distributor to remove module connectors. To disconnect the module connector, push on the connector
where it says PUSH, then slide connector from module.
6.
Remove the distributor unit.
7.
Remove ignition module attachment screws and carefully remove by pushing downward to disengage the module connectors from the distributor
bowl connector and then pulling outward.
8.
Check the condition of the stator connector inspecting for loosens, corrosion or damage.
9.
Clean the module mounting surface.
INSTALLATION
1.
If reusing the old ignition module clean the old dielectric grease from the back of the module.
2.
Apply a 1/32 in coating of dielectric silicone grease to metal base of module.
3.
Carefully position module under the distributor bowl and push up on the module to securely engage the 3 module connector pins.
4.
Install module mounting screws and tighten to 15-35 in lb (1.7-4.0 Nm).
5.
Install the distributor making sure that the rotor points to the mark on the distributor housing.
6.
Connect harness connectors to the module and install hold-down bolt and clamp.
7.
Install the distributor cap and tighten to 18-23 in lb (2.0-2.6 Nm). Check ignition wires are securely connected to the distributor cap and spark
plugs.
8.
Disconnect SPOUT connector and adjust base timing then tighten hold down clamp to 17-25 ft lb (23-34 Nm).
