Clutch: Testing and Inspection
Direct Clutch
INSPECTION
1. Inspect clutch cylinder thrust surfaces, piston bore, and clutch plate for serrations scores or burrs. Minor burrs or scores can be removed with
crocus cloth. Replace clutch cylinder if necessary.
2. Check fluid passage in the clutch cylinder for obstructions. Clean out all fluid passages and inspect for scores, replacing if necessary. Inspect
piston check ball for freedom of movement and proper seating.
3. Check the clutch release spring for distortion and cracks, replacing if necessary.
4. Inspect composition clutch plates, steel clutch plates, and clutch pressure plate for worn or scored bearing surfaces. Replace all deeply scored
parts.
5. Check clutch plates for flatness and fit on the clutch hub serrations. Discard any plate that does not slide freely on the serrations or that is not flat.
6. Check clutch hub thrust surfaces for scores and clutch hub splines for wear.
7. Inspect turbine shaft bearing surfaces for scores. If excessive clearance or scores are found, discard unit.
8. Check splines on turbine shaft for wear; replace the shaft if splines are excessively worn. Inspect bushing in turbine shaft for scores.
9. Inspect outer and inner races of one-way clutch for scores or damaged surface areas where the rollers contact the races.
10. Inspect rollers and springs for excessive wear or damage.
11. Inspect spring and roller case for bent or damaged spring retainers.
