Brake Master Cylinder: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation

1.

Remove the battery from vehicle.

2.

Disconnect the low fluid level sensor electrical connector.

3.

Loosen the brake line flare nuts, then disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder assembly.

4.

On models with manual transaxles, remove clamp, then pull the clutch hose from the brake/clutch fluid reservoir.

5.

On all models, cap the lines and master cylinder ports.

6.

Remove the two master cylinder retaining nuts, then master cylinder.

7.

Adjust master cylinder piston to push rod clearance as follows:

a. Position Master Cylinder Gauge tool No. T87C-2500-A or equivalent on the end of the master cylinder, loosen the set screw on end of master

cylinder. Push the gauge plunger against the bottom of the primary piston.

b. While holding the gauge in position, tighten the set screw.
c. Apply 19.7 inches Hg vacuum to the power brake with a vacuum pump.
d. Invert the gauge and place it over the power brake push rod.
e. Ensure that there is no space between the end of the adjustment gauge and the power brake push rod.
f. If there is space between the end of the adjustment gauge and the power brake push rod, loosen the push rod locknut and adjust the push rod

until there is no space.

8.

Reverse procedure to install master cylinder. Reactivate airbag system. After master cylinder installation, the piston to push rod clearance will be
as follows:

a. With no vacuum applied, 0.016-0.024 inches.
b. With 19.7 inches Hg applied, 0.004-0.01 inches.
