This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Ford Motor Company has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1991 model year Escort and Tracer cars
equipped with manual transmissions.
SAFETY DEFECT
On some of these cars, the ignition lock cylinder may come out of the steering column housing. Should this occur while the car is being driven, the
steering column could lock up, preventing the driver from exercising steering control. The lock cylinder is most likely to detach from the steering column
housing as the ignition key is being removed. If the lock cylinder does come out of the housing, do not attempt to reinstall it and do not drive the car.
Call your dealer for instructions.
REPAIRS
At no charge to you, your dealer will inspect and modify or replace the ignition lock cylinder on your car. Dealers currently have instructions and parts
ordering information.
NOTE:
If the lock set on your car needs to be replaced, any duplicate keys you may have will no longer work.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
The time needed for this service is about one hour. However, due to service scheduling times, your dealer may need your vehicle for one full working
day.
RENTAL CARS
If your car requires a new ignition lock, your dealer will provide you with a free (except for fuel) courtesy car until new parts arrive and repairs are
completed.
CALL YOUR DEALER
Call your dealer without delay. Ask for a service date and whether parts are in stock.
If your dealer does not have the parts in stock, they can be ordered before scheduling your service date. Parts would be expected to arrive within a week.
When you bring your car in, give the dealer this letter.
