Piston Ring: Testing and Inspection
End Gap
1. Select the proper ring set for the size of cylinder bore.
NOTE: Always use a piston ring expanding tool to install piston rings on a piston.
2. Position the piston ring in the cylinder bore in which it will be used.
3. Insert the piston ring into the cylinder by hand and use the piston to push the piston ring to the bottom of the piston ring travel area.
CAUTION: Use care to avoid damage to piston ring or cylinder bore.
4. Position piston ring in the cylinder bore so the piston ring is square with the cylinder wall.
5. Measure the piston ring end gap between the ends of a piston ring with a feeler gauge. If the piston ring end gap is less or greater than specified
limits, try another piston ring set.
-
The top piston ring end gap is 0.21-0.44 mm (0.008-0.017 inch).
-
The second piston ring end gap is 0.18-0.44 mm (0.007-0.017 inch).
-
The oil ring end gap is 0.20-0.76 mm (0.008-0.030 inch).
Replace the piston rings or oil ring if the end gap exceeds 1.0 mm (0.039 inch).
