Oil Filter: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Place a drain pan under the oil pan drain plug and the oil filter.

NOTE:  Ensure the engine and oil are warm and the vehicle is parked on level ground to get an accurate reading.

2. Remove the oil pan drain plug.

WARNING:  IF ENGINE IS HOT, OIL WILL BE HOT. HOT OIL MAY CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY.

3. Allow oil to drain.
4. Use an oil filter wrench and unscrew the oil filter from the oil filter adapter.
5. Clean the oil filter adapter recess and the filter gasket sealing surface. Make sure all gasket material is removed.

INSTALLATION 

1. Clean the oil pan drain plug and oil pan. Install a new oil pan drain plug gasket on the oil pan drain plug if missing or damaged.
2. Install the oil pan drain plug. Tighten the oil pan drain plug to 29-39 Nm (22-29 ft. lbs.).
3. Ensure that the old gasket has been removed from the oil filter adapter.
4. Coat the gasket on a new oil filter with clean engine oil.
5. Place the new oil filter in position on the oil filter adapter. Hand tighten the oil filter until the gasket contacts the sealing surface. Turn the oil filter

1 1/6 turns after initial gasket contact.

6. Remove the oil filler cap and install the correct amount of specified engine oil. Install the oil filler cap.
7. Start the engine and check for oil leaks.
8. Operate the engine at fast idle and check for oil leaks. If oil leaks are evident, perform the necessary service to correct leakage.
9. Stop the engine and check the oil level. Fill as required.
