REFRIGERANT OIL ADDITION

When replacing components of the air conditioning refrigerant system, measured quantities of oil should be added to the replacement components.
The refrigerant oil required for R-134a systems is a polyalkylene glycol (PAG) oil meeting Ford specification WSH-M1C231-B. It is important
that only the specified type and quantity of refrigerant oil be used. A surplus of oil will reduce the cooling capacity of the system. Too little oil will
result in poor lubrication of the A/C compressor.

DURING A/C COMPRESSOR REPLACEMENT

When replacing the A/C compressor, measured quantities of refrigerant oil should be added to the A/C compressor. It is important that only the
specified type and quantity of refrigerant oil be used. A surplus of oil will reduce the cooling capacity of the system. Too little oil will result in
poor lubrication of the A/C compressor.

When the A/C compressor operates, oil gradually leaves the A/C compressor and circulates through the system with the refrigerant. Eventually a
balanced condition is reached in which a certain amount of oil is retained in the A/C compressor and a certain amount is continually circulated. If
the A/C compressor is removed after the system has been operated, some oil will go with it. To maintain the original oil charge, it is necessary to
compensate for the amount of oil lost with the old A/C compressor by adding an equal amount to the new A/C compressor. Clean refrigerant oil
should be added to the replacement components as follows:
1. To drain the refrigerant oil, place the disc and hub assembly on the old compressor shaft so the compressor shaft can be rotated.

CAUTION:  A new A/C compressor is shipped without refrigerant oil. When adding refrigerant oil to a new A/C compressor, adhere closely
to the following instructions.

NOTE:  Prior to installing the replacement A/C compressor, drain the refrigerant oil from the removed A/C compressor into a clean, calibrated
measuring device.

2. Rotate the shaft by hand six to eight revolutions while pouring the refrigerant oil from the ports. This effectively empties the refrigerant oil.
3. Record the amount of refrigerant oil removed from the old A/C compressor.
4. If the amount of refrigerant oil drained from the old A/C compressor is between 85-142 ml (3-5 oz), pour the same amount plus an additional 

28 ml (1 oz) of clean refrigerant oil into the new A/C compressor.

If the amount of refrigerant oil drained from the old A/C compressor is greater than 142 ml (5 oz), pour the same amount of clean refrigerant
oil into the new A/C compressor as drained from the old A/C compressor.

If the amount of refrigerant oil drained from the old A/C compressor is less than 85 ml (3 oz), pour 85 ml (3 oz) of clean refrigerant oil into
the new A/C compressor.
