Clutch: Service and Repair
Clutch, A/T
1. Clean all parts thoroughly in a clean solvent and blow dry with compressed air.
CAUTION: Friction clutch discs should not be cleaned with cleaning solvent. Doing so may cause them damage. To clean the friction discs, wipe
with a lint free cloth.
2. New friction discs should be soaked in transmission oil for 15 minutes before being assembled.
3. When inspecting for damage to the friction discs look for:
-
Partially stripped, stripped, broken or bent spline teeth.
-
Burnt, worn or flaked off friction material.
-
Warped or bent discs.
4. Check the external spline clutch plates for:
-
Heat discoloration or warpage.
-
Scoring, grooves.
5. Inspect seals for:
-
Nicks, cuts or gouges on both the inner and outer diameter. Check lip seals for flexibility.
-
Check external seals for girdle springs and make sure they fit securely in their bores.
6. Inspect bushings for:
-
Surface wear such as scoring, grooves and burrs.
-
Fit securely in their bores.
7. Check clutch pistons for:
-
Cracks in the pressure surfaces.
-
Damage to the sealing surface area of integral pistons (seal is part of the piston).
-
Insure the scavenging check balls are in place and free to move in their cups.
-
Check seal grooves for cracks and pry lightly with a screwdriver to insure there are no "invisible" cracks.
8. Inspect the clutch drums for:
-
Grooves cut into the bore by sealing rings.
-
Scoring or damage on the surface where the thrust bearing rides.
-
Broken snap ring grooves.
-
Damage to the splines where the clutch discs ride.
9. Blow air through the oil passages and lube holes.
