Fluid - A/T: Testing and Inspection

FLUID LEVEL CHECK 

1. Ensure that the vehicle is on a level surface.
2. Apply the parking brake and block the drive wheels.
3. Run the engine to warm the transmission fluid between 66-77° C (151-171° F).
4. With the engine idling, apply the service brake and shift from PARK (P) to MANUAL LOW (1) and back, stopping in every gear.
5. With the vehicle in PARK (P), remove the fluid level indicator and ensure that the transmission fluid level is between the marks indicated.

NOTE:  Use the bottom temperature scale when the transmission fluid temperature is between 30-50° C (86-122 F). Use the top temperature scale
when the transmission fluid is between 66-77° C (151-171° F).

6. If the transmission fluid level is low, fill the transaxle with the specified type of transmission fluid.

CAUTION:  Do not overfill the transaxle.

FLUID CONDITION CHECK 

1. Remove the fluid indicator and inspect the transmission fluid condition.
2. Inspect the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) for contamination and the following:

a. Burnt transmission fluid.
b. Unusual smell.
c. Discoloration.
d. Contamination.

NOTE:  Contamination conditions include improper transmission fluid type, particles, water, dirt, foam, etc. If contamination is present, the
transmission fluid pan must be removed for further inspection. If the transmission fluid pan reveals contamination, the automatic transaxle
must be disassembled, inspected, flushed, and cleaned.

3. If the transmission fluid is burnt, proceed to Diagnosis by Symptom. See: Testing and Inspection/Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures If the

transmission fluid is contaminated, replace the transmission fluid. If the ATF is low, proceed to the ATF Leaks inspection.
