SUBJECT
Rattles from Rear Hatch
MODEL
Cooper, Cooper S production date prior to 12/03
SITUATION
Some owners may experience rattles from the rear hatch when driving over rough surfaces.
These rattles can be caused by the fit of the striker in the rotary latch or by play in the stop buffers.
CORRECTION
[NEW]Several improvements have been made to the latching system and stop buffers to eliminate play that may cause rattles. These improvements were
phased into production from 2/03 through 11/03.
[NEW]PARTS INFORMATION
[NEW]PROCEDURE
In case of a customer complaint, check the striker to see if it is painted gray or chrome plated. Any gray painted or chrome plated strikers should be
replaced with the black painted strikers, part number 51 24 7 154 735, per Repair Instructions, section 51 24 130. Depending on the production date of
the car, the following repairs should also be performed.
