DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Radiator Hose Chafing on Alternator

MODEL
Cooper with W10 engine and either standard or CVT transmission produced from November 12/2001 to January 31, 2002.

SITUATION

On certain vehicles there may be insufficient clearance between the alternator mounting bolt and the coolant hose. It is possible that as the car is driven,
normal movements of the engine and alternator could cause the bolt to come into contact with the hose and cause a chafe. Over time, a coolant leak could
develop.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves vehicles with the W10 engine, and either standard or CVT transmission, which were produced from November 12, 2001 to
January 31 2002.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer
Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

Measure the clearance between the alternator bolt and the coolant hose. If it is less than 7.5 mm, the hose will need to be re-aligned.

PROCEDURE

It is not necessary to remove the radiator hose.

Inspect the alignment marks (1) on the radiator hose and radiator. If they are not in alignment, loosen the hose clamp and re-align.
