SUBJECT
Creaking Noise When Driving from Heating and Air Conditioning Housing Area

MODEL
R50 (Cooper)

R52 (Convertible)

R53 (Cooper S)

SITUATION
While driving over uneven roads, a creaking noise is heard from the lower center dash in the area of the heating and air conditioning system housing.

CAUSE
The position of the center console harness is incorrect under the heating and air conditioning housing.

PROCEDURE

1.

Remove the center console trim at the front of the console. Press against the heating and air conditioning housing to verify the noise.

2.

If the creaking noise is present, remove the instrument panel trim as per repair manual RA 51 45 030, in order to gain access the harness.

3.

Once the instrument trim is removed and the carpet is removed in the area of the evaporator drain, inspect the harness for improper positioning as
shown in the picture to the left.

4.

In order to reposition the harness from its incorrect position (1) to the correct position (2), it may be necessary to unclip the harness from its
mounting clips.

5.

Once the harness is in the correct position (2), reinstall the previously removed parts and recheck the vehicle for creaking in this area.
