AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE
OR REPAIRS AND PRIOR TO RETAIL DELIVERY.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Repair or Retrofit IBS Battery Sensor

MODEL
R56 (Cooper, Cooper S)

SITUATION
The IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor) may not have been connected or installed. Therefore, the battery's state of charge cannot be detected and as a result,
the electrical load reduction function of the energy
management system is inoperative. Consequently, the battery could be discharged to such an extent that the engine will not start.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves R56 (Cooper and Cooper S) vehicles which were produced from July 8, 2007 to October 12, 2007.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer
Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The chassis number ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

PROCEDURE

Procedure 1 - Check if the IBS is installed and connect where necessary

Check if the IBS is installed on the battery. If it is installed, confirm that the connector (1) is fully connected or reconnect as necessary.

Recharge the battery.

Procedure 2 - Replace the battery negative cable with an IBS cable

If no IBS is installed, replace the existing battery negative cable with an IBS battery negative cable (RA 61 20 900 Disconnecting and connecting battery
