SUBJECT
Whistling Noise from the Top of the Windshield

MODEL
R56 (Cooper and Cooper S)

SITUATION
While driving at highway speeds, a whistling noise may be heard coming from the top of the windshield.

CAUSE
Wind causes the upper windshield trim strip to vibrate against the front edge of the roof.

CORRECTION
Apply a strip of butyl under the trim strip.

PROCEDURE

1.

Starting at one edge of the trim strip, pull the top edge of the strip away from the roof to expose the void underneath.

2.

Apply a strip of butyl to lower edge of the radius at the front edge of the roof sheet metal (1) as shown by the line in the illustration.

3.

The butyl should extend completely across the top of the windshield, from one side of the trim to the other.

NOTE: 

Position the butyl such that it's not visible once the trim is back is place, and such that the trim still sits flush on the front edge of the roof.
