Important!
Modified procedure for timing adjustment.
The timing is not determined at firing TDC of cylinder no. 1.
All pistons are in the 90° position.
Observe direction of engine rotation (direction of rotation always clockwise when viewed towards timing drive side).
Necessary preliminary tasks:

Remove cylinder head cover See: Cylinder Head Assembly/Valve Cover/Service and Repair.

Remove all spark plugs.

Remove vibration damper See: Cylinder Block Assembly/Harmonic Balancer - Crankshaft Pulley/Service and Repair.

Remove chain tensioner See: Timing Chain Tensioner/Service and Repair.

Remove both VANOS adjustment units See: Variable Valve Timing/Variable Valve Timing Actuator/Service and Repair/Removing and
Installing/Replacing Inlet and Exhaust Adjustment Units.

Remove PTFE ring See: Seals and Gaskets/Front Crankshaft Seal/Service and Repair at front.

Remove belt tensioner See: Drive Belts, Mounts, Brackets and Accessories/Drive Belt Tensioner/Service and Repair/Replacing Tensioning Device
for Alternator Drive Belt.
