Power Steering Pump: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation

REMOVAL

1.

Remove some fluid out of pump prior to removal.

2.

Loosen pulley locknut, turn adjusting nut counterclockwise, and remove power steering pump drive belt.

3.

Disconnect the connector bolt for the P/S pressure hose.

4.

Disconnect power steering suction hose.

5.

Remove the two bolts at the back of the P/S pump to the rear bracket.

6.

Remove the two front bolts securing the P/S pump to the pump bracket.

INSTALLATION

1.

Install the two front bolts securing the P/S pump to the pump bracker, then torque the bolts to 27-35 Nm (20-26 ft lb).

2.

Install the two bolts securing the rear of the P/S pump to the rear bracket, then torque the bolts to 31-42 Nm (23-31 ft lb).

3.

Install the Connector Bolt for the P/S pressure hose, being sure to change the 2 washers before securing the connector bolt. Torque the bolt to 
69-78 Nm (51-58 ft lb).

4.

Reconnect the P/S suction hose to the pipe and secure with a new clamp.

5.

Add enough Dexron-II or equivalent Power Steering Fluid to the proper mark on the dipstick.

6.

Bleed P/S pump as follows:

a. Raise and support front of vehicle.
b. Run engine for 3-5 seconds, stop engine, check and fill power steering pump reservoir as needed.
c. Quickly turn steering wheel all the way to right and left 10 times.
d. Start engine and idle for 3-5 seconds. Stop engine, check and add power steering pump reservoir as needed.
e. Repeat procedure until all air has been bled from system.
f.

If air cannot be bled completely after repeated attempts, repeat step e with engine running.

7.

Re-check fluid level and add as necessary.
