Compressor Shaft Seal: Service and Repair
Shaft Seal, Replace, Hitachi Model MJS170

Removal

1. Turn compressor upside down and drain oil from suction valve or port.
2. Remove clutch hub, pulley and bearing assembly, and coil assembly as follows:

a. Using clutch hub wrench, KV99412306 or equivalent, hold clutch hub and remove shaft nut from shaft.
b. Using clutch hub puller, KV994C5780 equivalent, remove clutch hub. Thread tool into bore of clutch hub, hold tool with wrench, and thread

in center bolt.

c. Pry off inner snap ring.
d. Remove pulley and bearing assembly. If assembly cannot be removed by hand, use tool Nos. KV994C5781 and KV994C5782 or equivalents.
e. Remove clamping screws that secure coil assembly leads, remove inner snap ring from coil assembly, then remove coil assembly from front

cover.

3. Using suitable pliers, remove retaining ring.
4. Remove key.
5. To remove shaft seat proceed as follows: 

a. Using tool Nos. KV994C4531, KV994C4532, and KV994C4559 or equivalents, plug high and low pressure openings of compressor.
b. Insert tool No. KV994C1552 or equivalent into hole in middle of blind cover at low pressure side and connect tool to refrigerant can.
c. Wrap rag around shaft and apply 28 - 71 psi from low pressure service valve of compressor and receive seat in rag.

6. If shaft seal cannot be pulled out, reset it to original position and apply refrigerant pressure again.
7. Using shaft seal remover and installer KV994C1143 or equivalent insert tool through open end of front cover. Depress carbon seal and hook tool

at case projection of shaft seal. Remove seal by slowly pulling out tool.

8. Check carbon seal surface of shaft seal for damage.
9. Check O-ring and carbon seal contact surface of shaft seal seat for damage. Ensure that O-ring contact surface at front cover is not damaged. 

Installation

1. Ensure that shaft seal contact surface is free of dirt and amply lubricated with clean refrigerant oil.
2. Cap shaft seal pilot, KV994C5784 or equivalent to top end of compressor shaft.
3. Using shaft seal remover and installer, KV994C1143 or equivalent insert shaft seal with shaft seal case and shaft cutout aligned.
4. Apply force to turn seal somewhat to left and right, ensuring that shaft seal seats properly in shaft cutout.
5. Fit new O-ring to outside groove of shaft seal seat, ensuring that it seats properly.
6. Apply refrigerant oil to contact surface and around shaft seal seat, so that it can slide easily in front cover.
7. Lightly coat surface of shaft with refrigerant oil, then push in shaft seal, and oil seal so that it seats properly at land of front cover.
8. Install key.
9. Using suitable pliers, compress retaining ring and fit it into front cover. Seat retaining ring firmly in groove and thoroughly wipe oil from shaft

surface.

10. Install tool No. KV99412329 or equivalent to shaft of compressor and turn shaft 5 to 6 turns in clockwise direction.
11. Check for gas leakage as follows: 

a. Plug high and low pressure openings of compressor, using tool Nos. KV994C4531, KV994C4532, and KV994C4559 or equivalents.
b. Install tool No. KV994C1552 or equivalent, charging hose, and refrigerant can to manifold gauge, then insert KV994C1552 into hole in

middle of blind cover at low pressure side.

c. Open valve of can top, charge refrigerant through low pressure service side, and purge air between high pressure hose and KV994C1552.
d. Perform leak test. If there is a leak, remove and reinstall parts.

12. Install compressor clutch assembly.
13. Charge compressor with new refrigerant oil in amount equal to that previously removed.
