Fast Idle Control Device (F.I.C.D.): Testing and Inspection

1.

Start the engine and warm to operating temperature.

2.

Check and record the idle speed.

3.

Turn the air conditioner ON.
^ The idle speed should raise approximately 100 rpm.

a. If the idle speed does raise approximately 100 rpm, the FICD solenoid is operating properly. END TEST.
b. If the idle speed lowers or does not raise, proceed to step 4.

4.

Disconnect the 4-pin connector.

5.

Turn the ignition key and A/C switch ON.

FICD Voltage Test

6.

Using a volt meter, check the voltage between the terminal and ground as shown.
^ Battery voltage should exist.

a. If voltage does not exist, refer to CHASSIS ELECTRICAL DIAGRAMS and check the circuit for continuity to the A/C relay.
b. If voltage does exist, proceed to step 7.

FICD Resistance Test

Using an ohm meter, check the resistance value between the terminals.
^ Continuity should exist.

a. If continuity does not exist, replace the solenoid and re-test.
b. If continuity does exist, proceed to step 8.

FICD Solenoid Operation Test

8.

Apply battery voltage to the terminals as shown.
^ A clicking sound should be heard.

a. If a clicking sound is heard, remove the solenoid and inspect the throttle chamber for restrictions and clean or replace as necessary and re-test.
