SERVICE INFORMATION
 
If the left rear door on an applied 1998 Maxima does not always unlock when using the remote or the main switch on the driver's armrest, the door lock
control rod may be improperly installed and/or too short.
 
If it is too short, the stroke or travel of the lock rod might be reduced.  The result may be that the lock button only moves half way.  In some cases, the
actuator may also make an abnormal noise.
 
The condition may only occur intermittently and might occur more frequently during high ambient temperatures.
 
Use the procedure below to slightly lengthen/straighten the lock rod and correct the described condition, if it should occur.
 
SERVICE PROCEDURE
 

1. Verify the condition exists as described above.

2. Remove the left rear door finisher.

3. Remove the inside door handle from the mounting plate.

4. Disconnect the lock rod (top/upper rod) and door handle rod (bottom/lower rod) from the inside door handle.  Allow the rods to hang freely.

5. Move the lock rod to the rearward position.

6. Look at the position of the lock rod in relation to the square hole in the door handle mounting plate.  An improperly positioned lock rod will be too

short and will line up to the left of center of the square hole when the lock rod is moved into the rearward position (see Figure 1).
