POWER STEERING GEAR REPLACEMENT, 1985-1987 MAXIMA

SERVICE INFORMATION

This bulletin describes a step-by-step procedure for removing and installing the power steering gear on 1985-1987 Maxima vehicles. This procedure
should be used when rebuilding or replacing the steering gear.

The Maxima power steering gear was modified at the end of November 1985 production. The new style gear assembly can be installed in earlier
production Maxima vehicles and is the only gear available for service.

When installing the new style gear in vehicles built before December 1985, a Tube Kit is required. The Tube Kit is required because the cylinder
assembly diameter on the new gear has been changed.

STEERING GEAR IDENTIFICATION

The new style steering gear can be identified quickly by examination. It does not have a separate aluminum cylinder end housing and it has wire boot
clamps instead of metal band clamps (Figure 1).
