Measure pinion rotating torque with an in.lbs. torque wrench (should be less than 16 in.lbs.). Measure rack sliding force with Spring Scale J35999
(should be less than 5.5 lb., at center of rack) (Figure 35 and Figure 36).

If necessary, adjust retainer. Completely remove lock nut, apply sealer to lock nut and adjusting screw threads, install lock nut and torque to 7-11
ft.lbs. (10-15 N-m) (Figure 37).

Center the rack in the housing (Figure 38). Distance should be 57 mm on driver side and 70 mm on passenger side.

31.

Install the rear housing cover cap with the pointer facing toward the driver side of the vehicle and mark the pointer position on the rear housing.

32.

Install the long cylinder tube and breather hose. Orient the cylinder end housing as required and torque the cylinder lock nut to 58-101 ft.lbs.
(78-108 N-m) using Cylinder Lock Nut Wrench J35995.
