Valve Spring: Testing and Inspection

OUT-OF-SQUARE

1. "S" is out-of-square. Measure dimension "S":

Outer spring: less than 2.2 mm (0.087 inch).
Inner spring: less than 1.9 mm (0.075 inch).

2. If it exceeds the limit, replace the spring.

PRESSURE

Check valve spring free height and check the pressure at the specified height.

Free height is 51.2 mm (2.016 inch) for outer springs and 44.1 mm (1.736 inch) for inner springs.

The standard:

With a pressure of 523.7 N (117.7 lbs.) the height should be 30.0 mm (1.181 inch.) for the outer springs.

With a pressure of 255.0 N (57.3 lbs.) the height should be 25.0 mm (.984 inch.) for the inner springs.

The limit:
^

The outer spring should need more than 228.5 N (51.4 lbs.) of pressure to obtain a height of 25.0 mm (0.984 inch).

^

The inner spring should need more than 225.6 N (50.7 lbs.) of pressure to obtain a height of 25.0 mm (0.984 inch).

If it exceeds the limit, replace the spring.
