Ignition Timing: Adjustments

1.

Check marks on pump and engine front cover, and move pump, if necessary, to align marks.

2.

Turn crank pulley in direction of engine rotation and align first mark on pulley with timing mark on cover, remove timing gear cover, check that
No. 1 piston is 18° BTDC on 1984 models, 15° BTDC on 1985-86 California models, or 16° BTDC on 1985-86 Federal models.

3.

Remove all injection tubes and governor hoses.

Remove No. 1 delivery valve holder and pull out delivery valve stopper and spring, Fig. 26.

5.

Install delivery valve holder without stopper and spring.

6.

Connect fuel hose so that fuel can be supplied to priming pump and install a test tube on the No. 1 delivery valve holder.

7.

Loosen bolts securing injection pump and push assembly all the way towards engine.

8.

Operate priming pump and slowly rotate injection pump until fuel stops flowing from test tube, Fig. 27. Receive fuel in a proper container and
avoid spilling on engine.

9.

Tighten injection pump bolts to fix pump in position where fuel stops flowing.

10.

Remove test tube and reinstall delivery valve spring and stopper.

11.

Install injection tubes, new timing cover gasket, and timing cover.

12.

Connect governor hoses and fuel hoses in proper position and bleed fuel system.
