Subject:
Metallic Click Noise from Front Brakes when Applied at Low Speeds
(Replace Brake Pad Abutment Shims)
Models:
1998 Chevrolet Malibu
1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass
Condition
Some owners may comment on a metallic click noise coming from the front brakes when applied at low speeds (approximately 5 mph, 8 km/h, or below)
or that the noise occurs once each time the vehicle is shifted from forward to reverse (or vice versa) with the brakes applied.
Cause
The condition may be due to a clearance condition between the brake caliper bracket and brake pads.
Correction
Replace the brake pad abutment shims using service kit, P/N 18025018. Once the correction has been made, replace the two removed caliper slide pin
bolts (one per side) with the supplied replacement bolts in the kit.
Torque caliper slide pin bolts to 31 N.m (23 lb ft).
