Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Description and Operation
Primary Fan
The primary cooling fan is turned on and off by the PCM based on inputs from the ECT sensor, vehicle speed sensor and the A/C system. Battery
voltage is applied at all times to terminal "A" of the cooling fan relay and when the ignition switch is in the Run position, battery voltage is applied to
terminal "D" of the relay. The PCM energizes the cooling fan relay by grounding the dark green (535) wire. The relay energizes and battery voltage is
applied to the cooling fan. The PCM opens circuit (535) to de-energize the relay and turn off the cooling fan. The PCM will turn the cooling fan on
when the A/C is requested at any vehicle speed and when A/C is off and vehicle speed is less than 35 mph, coolant temperature is above 225° F (104°
C) and vehicle speed is less than 35 mph, or the ECT sensor fails.
