Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
System Check
Less Heavy Duty Cooling
1.
With ambient air temperature above 60°F, start vehicle and set A/C selector, if equipped, to MAX. Coolant fan should turn on in a short period of
time.
2.
With engine coolant below operating temperature, move A/C selector to OFF. Coolant fan should turn off in a short period of time.
3.
Run engine at fast idle until engine coolant becomes hot. The coolant fan should turn on and run before coolant temperature indicator comes on or
the coolant temperature gauge needle reaches HOT.
4.
On VIN 3, with engine coolant above 226°F, turn engine off. Coolant fan should run for approximately 10 minutes or until coolant temperature
falls below 226°F.
With Heavy Duty Cooling
1.
With ambient air temperature above 60°F, start vehicle and set A/C selector, if equipped, to MAX. Puller coolant fan should be turned on in a
short period of time by the A/C dual pressure switch and pusher coolant fan should be turned on a short time later by the A/C dual pressure switch.
2.
With engine coolant below operating temperature, move A/C selector to OFF. Both fans should turn off in a short period of time.
3.
Run engine at fast idle until engine coolant becomes hot. The puller coolant fan should be turned on by the ECM when coolant temperature
exceeds 208°F and the pusher coolant fan should be turned on by the coolant fan switch when coolant temperature exceeds 226°F.
4.
With engine coolant above 226°F, turn engine off. Puller coolant fan should run for approximately 10 minutes or until coolant temperature falls
below 226°F.
Troubleshooting Hints
1.
On 1989 models, check C/H-FAN fuse.
2.
On 1990 models, check FAN/ELECT fuse.
3.
On 1991 models, check FAN/ALT fuse.
4.
On all models, if coolant fan runs with ignition switch off, replace coolant fan relay.
