Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Removal
Tool Required:

J 37096 Flywheel Holding Tool.
Remove or Disconnect
1. Drain engine oil.
2. Drain coolant.
3. Loosen coolant pump pulley bolts.
4. Serpentine belt. Refer to "Serpentine Drive Belt."
5. Coolant pump pulley.
6. Coolant by-pass hoses completely.
7. Lower radiator hose at front cover.
8. Crankshaft balancer. Refer to "Crankshaft Balancer."
9. Crankshaft sensor shield.
10. Electrical connections at crankshaft sensor and oil pressure sensor.
11. Oil pan to front cover bolts.
12. Oil pan to engine block bolts.
13. Lower vehicle.
14. Heater pipe nut and heater pipe.
15. Power steering pump brace bolt.
16. Power steering pump, position pump aside.
17. Ground wire nut and grounds from tensioner bracket.
18. Generator bolt at tensioner bracket.
19. Tensioner bolts and bracket.
20. Front cover bolts.
21. Front cover and gasket.
Clean

Gasket mating surfaces at front cover and cylinder block.
Inspect
^
Timing chain for overall "in and out" movement. Should not exceed 25.4 mm (1 inch). Sprockets for wear.
Important
^
If oil pan gasket is excessively swollen, the oil pan must be removed and the gasket replaced.
