1990-91 SILHOUETTE
CONDITION:
The power windows may operate intermittently on the 1990-91 Sihouette. The windows may roll down properly, then roll up one or two inches. After
waiting a few seconds, the switch can again be used to raise the windows either partially or all the way up.
CAUSE:
The drivers side power window switch may stick in the down position, causing the motor to overload, tripping the internal circuit breaker in the motor.
As the motor cools, the window can be operated again. Prolonged use of the windows with this condition may shorten the life of the motor.
CORRECTION:
Because of the intermittent nature of this condition, normal diagnosis may lead to replacement of the motor. If this condition is found, the driver's side
power window switch should be replaced with P/N 14098917 (1992 switch) following the procedure in Section 10-6 of the Service Manual.
The 1992 Silhouette uses a new design power window switch which does not have this condition.
Technicians should be familiar with the functional differences between the left hand window switch used on the 1990-91 Silhouette and the switch used
on the 1992 Silhouette.
It is important to understand how the different switches function, especially since the 1990-91 switches are serviced with the 1992 switch. The switch
function should be explained to owners of 1990-91 Silhouettes if the switch has had to be replaced.
1990-91 MODELS:
When the rear of the rocker switch (AUTO) is depressed, an audible click can be heard and the switch remains depressed while the window expresses
down. The switch will pop-up when the express down cycle is completed. Express down may be cancelled while the window is in motion by depressing
the front of the rocker switch.
1992 MODELS:
When the rear of the rocker switch (AUTO) is partially depressed, an audible click can be heard and the window will start downward but will stop if the
switch is released. This switch does not remain depressed. However, if the rear of the switch is fully depressed, a second less audible click can be heard
and the window will express down. Express down may be cancelled while the window is in motion by depressing the front of the rocker switch.
