SUBJECT:
PARTS DEPARTMENT SUPERCESSION OF LAMBDA SENSOR
MODELS:
1989 MODEL YEAR 405 VEHICLES
The National Parts Department has begun supplying only one Lambda Sensor (P/N 1628.L4) for 405 model vehicles. This sensor incorporates an 1130
mm long electrical lead (instead of 480 mm). Installation of this sensor on 1989 Model Year vehicles can be accomplished with a slight modification to
the injection wiring harness to relocate the Lambda Sensor connectors.
PROCEDURE:
- On Mi16 vehicles remove the power steering belt and on DL and S vehicles remove the bolts securing the auxiliary water manifold to the cylinder
head (do not remove the water hoses)
- Remove the lambda sensor
- Disconnect oil level sensor on rear of engine block (under exhaust manifold)
- Remove wire from oil temperature sender located on the rear of the oil pan (J4 only)
- Remove the wire harness hold-down strap from the bracket on the rear of the engine block in the area of the speedometer cable
- The wiring harness can now be removed from the side and rear of the engine for modification
- Remove the hard plastic wiring harness protector from the first several inches of wiring
- Unwrap approximately 75-100 mm (3-4 inches) of tape from the harness to separate the two lambda sensor wires from the remaining harness
- Retape the remaining wires and reinstall into the harness protector
- Reinstall the wiring harness protector in its original location; reinstall wire ties and harness hold-down strap
- Reconnect oil temperature and level sensors
NOTE:
On Mi16 vehicles, make sure the harness protector is routed between the engine block and the guard for the power steering pump pulley.
-
Install the new lambda sensor in the exhaust pipe; route the electrical leads to the left inner fender area
-
Use wire ties to secure the lambda wiring along the fuel lines
-
Connect the lambda sensor connectors and secure as necessary; both connectors should now be located between the battery and engine in the area of
the air intake snorkel
-
Reassemble remaining components (for Mi16 belt installation, refer to S.B. 336 dated March 1989)
WARRANTY INFORMATION:
This repair will be accepted when performed within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period of three (3) years and/or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs
