SUBJECT:
"STARTER RELAY REPLACEMENT AT P.D.I.
MODELS:
405 DL AND S VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
In order to maximize customer satisfaction, we are requesting that you replace the starter relay at P.D.I. on all 405 "DL" and "S" models equipped with
automatic transmissions. The replacement starter relay is equipped with a built-in resistor to avoid the possibility that the engine may intermittently stall
at idle when the gearshift is moved from PARK to REVERSE, or NEUTRAL to DRIVE, or NEUTRAL to REVERSE
PART REQUIRED:
1 resistor type "Cartier" relay (ID 03511), P/N 6555.62
VEHICLES AFFECTED: 405 "DL" and "S" automatic, up to VIN 505290
NOTE:
1002 vehicles built prior to VIN 505290 have been equipped with the resistor type relay at the port prior to shipment to the U.S. and they
will not require this modification.
IDENTIFICATION OF VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH NEW RESISTOR TYPE RELAY:
The starter relay is located under the left hand side of the dashboard and is the one with wires numbered 45, 45A, 46, 46A, & 46B.

White relay - resistor type - DO NOT REPLACE

Black relay - non-resistor type - MUST BE REPLACED
REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE:

Remove the relays bracket mounted to steering column under left hand side of dashboard (one 10 mm nut).

Identify the "black" starter relay by wire numbers 45, 45A, 46, 46A, arid 46B. This is necessary as there are other relays mounted to this bracket
and the starter relay may not always be in the same location on the bracket.

Remove this black starter relay.

Install a "white" resistor type relay (P/N 6555.62) in its place.

Reinstall relay bracket.

NOTE:
The starter relay replacement procedure at P.D.I. has been chosen as an easier alternative to the Park/Neutral relay modification described
in S.B. 305. It is to be strictly applied at P.D.I. as a preventive measure. On prior retailed vehicles which have experienced this problem,
both modifications are acceptable and effective.
