Hydraulic Lash Adjuster: Testing and Inspection

1.

Remove rocker arms as outlined under Camshaft, Rocker Arms, & Shafts Replacement.

Remove auto lash adjuster from each rocker arm. Keep lash adjusters and rocker arms in order to ensure proper installation.

3.

Immerse lash adjuster in clean diesel fuel.

While lightly pushing down inner steel ball using the small wire and retainer tool Nos. MD998442 and MD998441 or equivalent, move plunger up
and down four or five times to bleed air, Fig. 31.

Remove small wire and test as follows:
a. Press plunger and note resistance.
b. If plunger is hard to press, the auto lash adjuster is normal.
c. If plunger can be pressed easily, repeat steps 3 through 5.
d. If plunger can still be pressed easily after rebleeding, replace the auto lash adjuster.

6.

After air bleeding, set lash adjuster on the leak down test tool No. MD998440.

7.

After plunger has dropped .008-.020 inch, measure time taken for plunger to drop an additional .04 inch.

8.

If measured time is not within 4-20 seconds, replace auto lash adjuster.
