Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
W/Four Wheel Drive
Double Offset Joint Type Driveshaft
NOTE: Driveshafts are identical between two wheel drive and four wheel drive, except for the center bearing support assembly on the left side four
wheel drive driveshaft.
NOTE: The following procedures are only for the left side drive axle. Refer to "Colt, Colt Wagon, Colt Vista, Summit & Summit Wagon W/Two
Wheel Drive" for service procedures not cover in this section.
Center Bearing, Replace
1. Remove double offset joint outer race from drive axle.
2. Using a suitable grinder, partially grind the certain point of the circumference of the bearing retainer to a thickness of 0.04-0.06 inch.
3. Using a suitable hammer and chisel, break then remove bearing retainer. When the break is made in the bearing retainer, tap the chisel in between
the bearing and bearing retainer and pry to remove the bearing retainer.
CAUTION: Do not damage the drive axle in any way.
4. Remove center bearing assembly using bearing remover MB990560 or equivalent and a press.
5. To install proceed as follows:
a. After passing the snap ring through the double offset joint outer race, use tool MB990560 or equivalent and a press to install center bearing
assembly onto the shaft of the double offset joint outer race.
b. Face polished surface of the bearing retainer toward the bearing side and, after placing it onto the shaft of the double offset joint outer face, use
the tool mentioned previously and the press to install bearing retainer.
c. Install drive axle onto double offset joint outer race.
Center Bearing Dust Seal, Replace
1. Using a suitable screwdriver, remove dust seal from bearing bracket assembly.
2. Using a handle and adapter installer tools No. MB990938 and 990930 or equivalents and a mallet, press dust seal in until seal is flush with bearing
bracket end.
3. Coat inside circumference of seal with suitable grease.
Tripod Joint Type Driveshaft
NOTE: Driveshafts are identical between two wheel drive and four wheel drive, except for the center bearing support assembly on the left side four

the tool mentioned previously and the press to install bearing retainer.
c. Install drive axle onto double offset joint outer race.
