ELECTRONIC CLUSTER (U52)

Condition:

The 1988 and 1989 Pontiac 6000 and STE with the Electronic Cluster (U52) may reset when a switch is activated, usually the lumbar seat adjustment
switch. The reset causes the entire cluster to go blank, then go thru the "start-up" sequence that normally happens when the ignition is turned on.

Cause:

The cluster sees a high voltage spike, which it interprets as an "off" signal. This condition was corrected in production after VIN K6624944.

Correction:

1.

Disconnect negative battery cable.

2.

Remove the instrument cluster following Service Manual instructions.

3.

From beneath the IP, remove the main cluster connector (black body). Cut the brown wire from cavity # 7 (see illustration). Splice a 1000 (1K)
ohm, 1/4 watt resistor into the wire, solder, and tape. The resistor may be obtained from a local electronics supply outlet, such as Radio Shack.

Replace the connector in the IP.

5.

Reconnect the negative battery cable, and verify that the instrument cluster operates properly.
