Accumulator HVAC: Service and Repair

ACCUMULATOR

Accumulator Mounting

TOOL REQUIRED:    

-

J 38042 Dual O-Ring Joint Separator (or equivalent)

-

J 39400 ACR 4; Machine (or equivalent)

IMPORTANT:   

-

Brazed fittings are on the condenser and evaporator. These fittings cannot be turned because the fitting is brazed to the pipe. It is important that the
service technician recognize which fitting is to be turned and use backup wrenches. The brazed fitting not to be turned is always the same color as
the pipe it is brazed to (unpainted or unplated aluminum).

Accumulators for R134a systems have metric fittings identified by a groove cut into the fitting flats. Replace only with like accumulator or thread
damage will result.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

-

Recover refrigerant from A/C system, refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling. See: Service and Repair

1. Rear engine sight shield. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement See: Engine, Cooling and Exhaust/Engine/Service and Repair.
2. Electrical connector from pressure cycling switch.
3. Loosen retaining clamp screw.
4. Accumulator inlet and outlet connections using J 38042.
5. Accumulator from vehicle.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. Accumulator inlet and outlet connections (hand tight).
2. Retaining clamp screw.

Tighten screw to 6 Nm (53 lb. in.).

3. Torque accumulator inlet and outlet connections to specifications.

Tighten Accumulator connections to 34 Nm (25 lb. ft.).  

4. Electrical connector to pressure cycling switch.
5. Rear engine sight shield. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement See: Engine, Cooling and Exhaust/Engine/Service and Repair.

Evacuate, charge, and leak test A/C system.
