Flywheel - Excess Paint in Mounting Holes

Number 86 - 6 (GAS) - 87

Date

5/91

Subject:

EXCESS PAINT IN FLYWHEEL MOUNTING
HOLES ON GOODWRENCH ENGINE REC.
FROM SPO (CLEAN MOUNTING HOLES)

1984-86 6000 AND FIERO WITH 2.5L

NOTE:

THIS APPLIES TO GOODWRENCH PARTIAL ENGINES ONLY (P/N 10101781)

Condition:

Incorrect clamp load on Flywheel bolts.

Cause:

Paint accumulation in the Flywheel mounting holes. This will create a false torque condition.  The Flywheel may seem to be secure, however, it will soon
begin to move under normal engine conditions and may elongate the mounting holes in the Flywheel.

Correction:

The Flywheel mounting hole threads should be cleaned out with a tap. The holes should be retapped with a M-10X1.5-6H standard tap.
