Drive Belt: Adjustments
Belt Tension Gage
Serpentine Belt Routing
1. Run the engine for 5 to 10 minutes.
2. Shut the engine off and check the belt tension using J 23600-B Belt Tension Gage.

On vehicles not equipped with air conditioning, check the belt tension between the tensioner and the power steering pump pulley.

On vehicles equipped with air conditioning, check the belt tension between the tensioner and the air compressor pulley.
3. Run the engine for 30 seconds and recheck the belt tension.
4. Repeat the above step. Belt tension is the average of the three readings taken.

Belt tension should be 422 to 623 N (95 to 140 lb.) - without air conditioning.

Belt tension should be 378 to 490 N (85 to 110 lb.) - with air conditioning.
5. Replace the drive belt tensioner if belt tension is below the minimum specified and if the drive belt tensioner is within its operating range. Refer to
Drive Belt Tensioner / Service and Repair.
