Brake Caliper: Service and Repair
Delco-Moraine Single Piston Rear Disc Brake
Caliper Removal
Do not mix power steering fluid with brake fluid. If brake seals contact steering fluid or steering seals contact brake fluid, damage will result.
1.
Remove two thirds of the total brake fluid capacity from the master cylinder front reservoir, to prevent overflow of brake fluid.
2.
Support vehicle on a hoist and remove tire and wheel assembly.
3.
Install one nut with flat side facing rotor to prevent rotor from falling out when caliper is removed.
4.
Loosen parking brake cable tension at equalizer, then remove cable from parking brake lever and remove return spring, locknut, lever, lever seal
and anti-friction washer. Lever must be held in place while removing nut.
5.
Clean surface in area of lever seal, then using a 7 inch (or larger) C-clamp, with the solid end on lever stop and screw end on back of outboard
lining, turn clamp until piston is bottomed in caliper. Do not position C-clamp on actuator screw.
6.
Before removing clamp, lubricate housing surface under lever seal with silicone lubricant.
7.
Install a new anti-friction washer, a new lever seal and lever. Install lever on hex with arm pointing downward.
8.
Rotate lever toward front of vehicle and while holding in this position, install nut and torque to 25 ft. lbs. and rotate lever back to stop.
9.
Install lever return spring and remove C-clamp. On Cadillac springs are color coded, red for the righthand caliper and black for the lefthand
caliper.
10.
Disconnect brake line from caliper and plug openings to prevent loss of fluid and entry of dirt.
11.
On all calipers except Eldorado and righthand Brougham remove the brass bolt from the block. If brake line nut is seized, brass bolt and block
can be removed with brake line attached by removing bolt. Plug openings to prevent loss of fluid and entry of dirt.
12.
Remove caliper mounting bolts and remove caliper.
13.
Reverse procedure to install and torque caliper mounting bolts to 30 ft. lbs. When installing brass bolt and block, use two new copper gaskets.
Torque bolt or connector to 30 ft. lbs.
Inspection
1.
Clean corrosion and dirt from face of piston. Inspect piston and check valve area for fluid leakage, indicated by excessive moisture around boot
area.
2.
Inspect dust boot for cuts, cracks or other damage which may affect its sealing ability. If leaks are present, replace dust boot. Do not use
compressed air to clean caliper as it may unseat the dust boot.
3.
Inspect piston boot seal. Replace boot seal if leakage is indicated.
4.
Inspect for leaks at threaded end of actuator screw. Replace seal if leakage is indicated. If bore is nicked or scratched, replace caliper.
