Oil Pan: Service and Repair
CAMARO V6-173 & V8-305
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove fan shroud.
2.
Raise and support vehicle, then drain crankcase.
3.
Remove AIR pipe and hanger bolts from catalytic converter.
4.
Remove starter motor attaching bolts and position starter motor aside.
5.
Remove engine mount through bolts, then raise engine.
6.
Remove oil pan attaching bolts and oil pan. If oil pan removal is hampered by the forward crankshaft throw and/or counterweight
extending downward, turn crankshaft as needed to put throw in a horizontal position.
7.
Reverse procedure to install, using a new gasket and seals, as equipped. If RTV sealer is used to seal pan, apply a 1/8 inch wide bead of sealant
1052366 or equivalent to pan sealing flange. If M6 x 1.0 bolts are used, torque to 8 ft. lbs. If M8 x 1.25 bolts are used, torque to 18 ft. lbs.
V8 ENGINES EXC. CORVETTE & CAMARO
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove air cleaner and snorkle.
3.
On models with 2 piece fan shroud, remove upper half of shroud. On models with one piece shroud, remove retaining screws and release shroud
from lower retaining clips.
4.
Remove distributor cap to prevent breakage and lay cap aside, leaving spark plug wires connected.
5.
On models equipped with cruise control, remove cruise control servo bracket.
6.
On all models, raise and support vehicle, then drain oil pan.
7.
Disconnect exhaust crossover pipe at exhaust manifold and catalytic converter.
8.
Remove flywheel cover or torque converter cover. If equipped with manual transmission, remove starter motor before the flywheel cover.
9.
Support engine with a suitable jack and remove engine mount through bolts.
10.
Remove oil pan bolts and lower oil pan. Check that the forward crankshaft throw and/or counterweight is not extending downward as to block
removal of oil pan. Rotate crankshaft as necessary to position crankshaft to permit pan removal.
11.
Raise engine and install engine mount through bolts.
12.
Remove oil pan.
13.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque oil pan bolts to 80 inch lbs.
