Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch (For Computer): Description and Operation

Sensor--mounted in the engine coolant stream--supplies a varying DC voltage to the ECM representing engine temperature.

Sensor resistance is high when the engine is cold and low when the engine is warm. 

The ECM controls temperature dependent systems accordingly.
