Differential Axle Housing: Service and Repair

Firebird

1.

Hoist car and support at frame and under rear axle housing.

2.

Disconnect both shock absorbers and remove bolt from left side of track bar to axle.

3.

Remove bolt from brake line junction block at axle housing and disconnect brake lines from junction block.

4.

Lower rear axle assembly and remove springs.

5.

Remove rear wheels and drums and remove rear axle cover and drain lube.

6.

Disconnect brake lines from axle housing clips.

7.

Remove axle shafts, brake backing plates, lower control arms and torque arm from axle housing.

8.

Disconnect driveshaft from rear axle flange and place aside after marking for reinstallation.

9.

Remove rear axle housing.

10.

Reverse procedure to install.
