Firebird V8-350 5.7L VIN P SFI (1996)
1. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
2. Parking brake cable at equalizer.
3. Tire and wheel. Install wheel nuts to retain rotor (39).
4. Brake hose fitting bolt/screw (32), brake hose and brake hose gaskets (34) only if caliper is being removed for overhaul. Discard old brake hose
gaskets (34). Plug hole in rear brake caliper (14) and brake hose.
Park Brake Cable Attachment
5. Parking brake lever return spring (4) only if defective. Discard parking brake lever return spring (4) if coils are opened.
6. Parking brake cable (35) from parking brake actuator lever (5) and parking brake cable bracket (8).
7. Vibration dampener nut (41) and vibration dampener (40) from parking brake cable bracket (8), if necessary.
8. Brake caliper guide pin bolt (13) and discard.
9. Rear brake caliper bolt (9) and discard, only if removing caliper from vehicle.
10. Rear brake caliper (14) from rotor (39) and brake caliper mounting plate (17). If caliper overhaul or replacement is not required, hang rear brake
caliper (14) from suspension to avoid damage to brake hose.
11. Inner and outer pads (29 and 30) only if they are being replaced or if brake caliper mounting plate(17) is being removed.
12. Brake pad anti-squeal shim (10), if inner and outer pads (29 and 30) were removed.
a. Inspect Caliper guide pins (15) for free movement in caliper mounting plate (17). Caliper guide pin boot (16) for proper seating in retaining
groove of caliper guide pin (15) and rear caliper mounting plate (17). Replace guide pins (15) or guide pin boots (16) if corroded, worn or
damaged. Lubricate the inner diameters of the caliper bolt bushings with silicone grease and also lubricate the caliper bolts with silicone
grease.
b. Inspect Inner and outer pads (29 and 30) for wear and maximum taper of 0.15 mm (0.006 inch). Replace with new pads (29 and 30) if they are
tapered beyond specification. Replace inner and outer pads (29 and 30) in sets of four.
