Subject: Automatic Transmission 6th Gear Whine at Approximately 109 km/h (68 mph) (Install New Transmission Mount)
Models:
2008-2009 Pontiac G8
with 6L80E Automatic Transmission (RPO MYC)
Condition
Some customers may comment that when the vehicle is cruising at around 109 km/h (68 mph) in 6th gear, a very high-pitched noise may be heard. Once
the speed either increases or decreases outside the speed range of 105 to 113 km/h (65 mph to 70 mph), the noise seems to go away. The frequency at
which this condition peaks is 1240 Hz.
This noise is only heard while in 6th gear.
Cause
This condition may be caused by transmission mount vibration isolation.
Correction
After verifying that the vehicle exhibits the condition described above, proceed with the following steps:
"R" is shown here for "rear"
Remove this tang
1. Obtain a revised transmission mount and two new, longer fixing bolts. Refer to the Parts Information section.
2. Remove the locating tangs (as shown) from the new mount for installation to the existing cross-car support bracket. Cut away with a suitable
cutting tool and recoat with black paint.
Note
The "R" on the mount indicates "rear".
3. Secure the mount using two new bolts to the transmission.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 58 Nm (43 lb ft).
4. Fasten the two existing M8 nuts which hold the new mount to the cross-car support.
Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 22 Nm (16 lb ft).
5. Secure the cross-car support to the underbody of the vehicle.
Tighten
Tighten the existing four M10 bolts to 58 Nm (43 lb ft).
