Use of Riv-Nuts for Stripped Out or Lack of Fender Mounting Locations Due to Structural Replacement
Models:
1995-96 Chevrolet Cavalier
1995-96 Pontiac Sunfire
Due to the form and pierce process at assembly plants used to locate and secure fenders, the following SPO structural assemblies will not have fender
mounting provisions:

PANEL

FRONT WHEELHOUSING ASSEMBLY
^
FRAME
^
WINDSHIELD SIDE OUTER ASSEMBLY AND FRAME
^
BODY SIDE ASSEMBLY
With replacement of any or all of the above listed assemblies, mounting holes must be added. A riv-nut is to be used for fender attachment or to replace
stripped out or damaged fender attachment threads.
Fender mounting riv-nuts can be installed by using the following steps:

Structural assemblies that are replaced must be installed using the Cavalier-Sunfire Collision Repair Issues Manual.
1. Locate four fender horizontal holes using three dimensional coordinates. Use a center punch to identify area to be drilled.
2. Use a 13 mm drill bit and drill all fender mounting holes marked in Step 1.
3. Install M-8 riv-nuts using J 42151-8MS.
4. Apply a multi-purpose lubricant to fastener threads before installing fender.
When locating the two fender lower attachments, install the fender and align the adjacent panels. When alignment is achieved, centerpunch locations and
remove fender. Drill and install riv-nuts, then install fender.
