Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement

Tools Required

J 8614-01 Pinion Flange Holder

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement  (See: Drive Belts, Mounts, Brackets and Accessories/Drive Belt/Service and

Repair).

2. Remove the generator from the engine. Refer to Generator Replacement  (See: Starting and Charging/Charging System/Alternator/Service and

Repair/Generator Replacement).
Caution:  Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution  (See: Starting and Charging/Battery/Service Precautions/Technician Safety Information/Battery
Disconnect Caution).

3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 
4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling  (See: Cooling System/Service and Repair).
5. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture  (See: Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Engine Support Fixture).
6. Remove the engine mount and engine mounting bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement  (See: Drive Belts, Mounts, Brackets and

Accessories/Engine Mount/Service and Repair).

7. Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to Cylinder Head Cover Replacement  (See: Cylinder Head Assembly/Valve Cover/Service and Repair).

8. Set the number 1 piston to the top dead center (TDC) position.
9. Align the camshaft timing sprockets.

10. Disconnect the power steering oil pressure switch connector.
11. Raise and properly support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle  (See: Maintenance/Service Intervals).
12. Remove the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side  (See: Body and Frame/Splash Guard/Service and

Repair/Engine Splash Shield Replacement  - Left Side).
