Brake Caliper Replacement - Rear

Removal Procedure

Caution: Brake fluid may irritate eyes and skin. In case of contact, take the following actions:

Eye contact - rinse thoroughly with water.

Skin contact - wash with soap and water.

If ingested - consult a physician immediately.

Notice:  Brake fluid will damage electrical connections and painted surfaces. Use shop cloths, suitable containers, and fender covers to prevent brake
fluid from contacting these areas. Always re-seal and wipe off brake fluid containers to prevent spills.

1. Use a siphon in order to remove half of the brake fluid from the reservoir.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
4. Place a container below the brake hose (1) in order to catch the brake fluid.
5. Remove the rear brake hose fitting (3) and the washer from the caliper.
6. Remove the caliper bolts (1,8).
7. Remove the caliper from the disc brake backing plate.
8. Remove the brake pads and the hardware from the caliper. Refer to Brake Pads Replacement - Rear. See: Disc Brake System/Brake Pad/Service

Inspection Procedure

1. Inspect the disc brake caliper components. Repair or replace parts as necessary. Refer to Disc Brake Mounting and Hardware Inspection - Rear.

2. Inspect the caliper. Repair or replace parts as necessary. Refer to Brake Caliper Inspection.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the brake pads and the hardware to the caliper (10). Refer to Brake Pads Replacement - Rear.
2. Install the caliper to the disc brake backing plate.
3. Apply wheel bearing lubricant, GM P/N 1051344, Canadian P/N 993037, or an equivalent lubricant, to the caliper slide pins (2,9) and the caliper

boots (3,6,7).

4. Install the slide pins and the boots to the caliper.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

5. Install the caliper bolts (1,8).

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 46.6 N.m (34.37 lb ft).

6. Install a NEW washer to the flexible hose lock hole in the caliper.
7. Install the brake hose to the caliper.
8. Install the brake hose fitting (2).

Tighten
Tighten the fitting to 29 N.m (21.4 lb ft).

9. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
